Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon white sugar
  • 1 teaspoon sea or table salt
  • 1/3 cup cold unsalted butter
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter for brushing tops, optional

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 425 °F.In a large bowl, combine flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
Cut butter and stir into the flour mixture until it resembles cornmeal.
Gradually pour in the buttermilk, stirring until the dough comes together. Knead the dough out onto a clean countertop and form it into a ball.
Press the dough flat until it is 1-inch thick. Use a circle biscuit cutter or a drinking glass to cut out your biscuits. Butter the bottom of the pan and place biscuits on it. Bake for 12 minutes or until golden brown.
Brush the tops with melted butter, if desired.
